     A name is more than a syllable combined; it is a declaration of your personality, a beacon of your heritage and a canvas upon which the deeds of your soul will be painted. In a world where the weight of names is increasingly cast aside, I urge you to embrace yours with reverence and responsibility, for your name holds the power to guide you, uplift you and define you.

    First, from the moment you drew your first breath while still cradled in innocence, your name became your first identity. Before you could walk or speak, it was bestowed upon you as a gift from those who birthed and nursed you in hope. No longer a nameless ‘baby’ you were marked with a name chosen with intention and purpose, shaped by dreams, prayers and tradition. A name like grace whispers of divine favour. Victor heralds triumph. Hope kindles expectation. Yet, in youth, we often fail to grasp the depth of this gift. I beseech you; seek the story of your name. Why was it given? What does it signify? In my many years, I have seen that those who reflect upon their name’s meaning walk with greater clarity in chaos and draw strength in trials. Know this, a name understood becomes a compass pointing not merely to whom you are but to whom you are meant to become.

     You may say, “But others have my name”. Know this, my children: every name, though shared by others, is uniquely yours. It is shaped not by spelling, but by the singular path you tread. No two souls named Trinity or Samuel walk the same journey; one may be a servant of justice and another bearer of peace. It is your story, your values and your decisions that breathe life into your name.

Across the ages and continents, names have been chosen with sacred intent. In African traditions, in Hebrew lineages, in indigenous tongues, names are not random. They are rich with heritage, scriptural truths, ancestral memory and generational hope. A name is a vessel meant to inspire, to guide and to protect. In my village, we understand this well. Names like Abasifreke, meaning “God hasn’t forgotten” or Etietop, meaning “GoodNews,” are not just sounds, they are summons. They called us to live authentically to walk in truth and to honour our place in the world. Embrace the uniqueness of your name, for it is a divine appointment to contribute a light that only you can bring into this world.

     Yet too many pass through life without asking, “What does my name mean?” They walk in the shadow of forgotten meaning, unaware that their name holds a key to their purpose. To know the roots of your name whether it speaks of wisdom, peace, strength or light is to wield a shield against confusion and despair. Your name can be a moral compass, a wellspring of resilience, and a banner of strength when life turns dark. Let it be your anchor. I urge you: ask your parents, your grandparents, even your tribe, ‘Why was I named this?’ And if the answer is unclear, give it meaning with how you live.

     Hear me well; the name you were given is only the beginning. Through your actions, your choices and your character, you will earn new names. Life will either crown your birth name with honour or cover it in shame. And these names, be they spoken or remembered, will define your legacy. Consider the Apostles. Peter was once Simon, but he became “the rock.” Our Lord Jesus bears a name now spoken with reverence across the earth because He lived with divine love and sacrifice. And yes, even the devil, his name remembered with fear earned it through rebellion.

     My dear ones let this truth settle in your heart: a good name is more valuable than gold, but once tarnished, it is a burden hard to lift. Let your integrity write the legacy your name deserves. Let your name inspire others to walk straighter and dream deeper.

Yet I have seen many, especially among the young and bright, shrink from their names. They feel their names are too plain, too “local” and too strange. They hide behind nicknames, anglicize their roots or speak their name without pride. Some feel their names carry shame. But let an old man’s truth comfort you: no name is unworthy when it is lived with purpose. Even a name once deemed “wayward” can blaze with dignity having been redefined it with righteousness. Give it wings with honour. Tie it to your victories, your kindness and your resilience. In my youth, I saw many mocked for their names become the pillars of their communities. Why? Because they stood tall in the truth of whom they were. Do the same. Stand boldly in your name. It is your cornerstone.

     In these modern times, I grieve that names are often chosen for trend rather than truth. Names drawn from brands or from raw emotions like Rage, Vanity, make me wonder: What foundation will these names provide? Though all names have potential, their power shines brightest when chosen or reclaimed with intention. A name like Grace will always edify. Victor will always push one toward conquest. Hope will always point to light. But any name, even the most unusual, can be redeemed and made honourable by the life lived beneath it. Intentionality is the forge of meaning. Live your name’s worth.

     And so, my beloved ones, know this above all; your name is your first legacy. Long before you build wealth or stature, you wear your name. And long after your breath has quieted, it will remain spoken on the lips of those you loved, etched in the memories of those you touched.

     Let your name become a song in the hearts of others, a name that brings peace when remembered, a name that uplifts when spoken. In my long years, I have seen names rise to legend and fall into forgetfulness.
